AUSTIN -- Police have charged a former employee at an Austin recreation center with sexual abuse of a child.

Austin police say Juan Garza, 30, met his victim, a 14-year-old boy, at the Dove Springs Recreation Center one year ago. He has worked at the rec center since 2003 and been a city employee 2002.

APD Police Chief Art Acevedo said the relationship between Garza and the teen turned inappropriate about one month ago when the two began exchanging messages via social media. The messages resulted in a late night meeting December 2nd where police say Garza sexually assaulted the boy multiple times.

Garza reported the assault himself on Wednesday Dec. 5. He was arrested Friday and charged with sexual assault of a child.

Acevedo says at this time there are no other victims, and police have no reason to believe there are other victims.

Garza is no longer employed with the city.

Austin police counselors will be at Dove Springs rec center this Saturday Dec. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Monday and Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.
