AUSTIN -- Crews are still working to clear smoke from smoldering compost piles which were ignited by high winds a week ago.

The fires are smoldering at the Hornsby Biosolids Bend Plant off FM 973. Austin Fire Department crews contained the fires and are now trying to clear the smoke with the help of Austin Water crews. AFD says experts tested the air quality in the area and have not found any alarming levels of contaminents.

The compost piles are a made of mulch, yard trimmings and by-product of the solid waste (Dillo Dirt). Officials say the piles stretch up about 20 feet high and are in a constant state of chemical composting. This means they can ignite with high wind gusts like we saw last Monday.

Neighborhoods will continue to be updated as crews continue to try and clear the smoke from the area.
