AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A former Austin police officer who shared credit card fraud case details with a suspect has pleaded guilty to lying to investigators.

A federal judge in Austin on Tuesday afternoon accepted the plea from 34-year-old Jermain Gaspard.

Gaspard was an Austin police officer during the 2013 incident but later resigned. He faces up to five years in prison after pleading guilty to making a false statement to federal authorities.

Authorities say Gaspard last April used a computer in his patrol car to do an unauthorized database check in a credit card fraud investigation, then shared details with the suspect. Gaspard later denied providing information to the suspect. Further details on the person weren't immediately released.

Gaspard remains free on bond pending sentencing.
