AUSTIN -- It was a great day for hundreds of local elementary students. Friday Blackshear Elementary in East Austin held a special role model fair.
Visitors from local businesses and government agencies met with second through fifth grade students to talk about their careers and what it took to become successful. They included representatives from the Austin police and fire departments, the AISD and Travis County, along with local banks, newspapers and ad agencies.
The whole idea is to show children kids the wide range of options available to them if they stay in school.
"This is one of the days that they really look forward to because most of them have probably never seen some of these role models. They've probably seen them in the newspaper. They've maybe seen them on TV, but they have never actually seen them," said the fair's coordinator Margarine Beaman.
KVUE News Daybreak and Midday anchor Yvonne Nava met with students to talk about careers in broadcasting and journalism.
