AUSTIN -- A driver has been injured after crashing his car into a home in Southwest Austin.

The incident happened Tuesday around 5:15 a.m. at 6101 Salcon Cliff Drive near Escarpment Boulevard, between Slaughter and Davis Lanes.

Initial reports said the driver was pinned inside the vehicle following the crash, but emergency crews removed the man without incident.

AFD Captain Brandon Wade says it appears the driver is about 18 years old. He told officials he fell asleep while driving.

A couple who lives inside the home were asleep at the time. They were not injured.

"It is not something we see every day. It does happen quite a bit in the city. It all just depends on how far they go into the house and, thankfully, this did not go into any bedrooms or where anybody was sleeping, cause that is a concern at this time of the morning," Wade said.

He added that the damage to the home is in the front room and entry way. Crews are working with a structural engineer to remove the car without causing the brick to fall.

Because the damage is to the front of the home, the residents will still be able to go inside.
