AUSTIN -- Austin firefighters watched hot spots over a mulch fire at the Hornsby Bend Wastewater Treatment Facility Wednesday morning.
A fire sparked in a pile of Dillo Dirt at the facility Tuesday afternoon. AFD investigators believe the compost pile spontaneously sparked due to compost heat.
At the time, Travis County was under a Red Flag Warning with heavy winds which fueled the flames. It burned through about an eighth of an acre of the mulch pile. Thick smoke spread out across the Colorado River Basin.
Fire crews knocked the fire out relatively quickly but stayed on scene to watch over hot spots and potential flare-ups.
