DEL VALLE, Texas -- The Del Valle man shot by a Bastrop County Sheriff's deputy last week has died.
The sheriff's office says 78-year-old Jose Cantu pointed a gun at the deputies after his daughter called 911 saying Cantu threatened her.
The Bastrop County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to a 911 call from a woman who said her elderly father was threatening her with a firearm.
"When he did approach the subject with the gun, there were some verbal commands (to drop his weapon) issued by the officer. The officer fearing for his safety did fire on the subject," Bastrop County Sheriff Terry Pickering said.
Neighbors say Cantu was in a wheelchair, and the only weapon he owns is a BB gun.
Cantu died Friday March 15 at University Medical Center Brackenridge from injuries sustained in the shooting.
The two deputies involved in the Del Valle incident remain on administrative leave while Bastrop County Sheriff's Office investigates.
