AUSTIN -- With millions of Texans hitting the road this Thanksgiving holiday, Texas Department of Public Safety officials want to make sure drivers keep the roads safe.

“Putting safety first increases your chances of arriving at your Thanksgiving destination safe and sound,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “Holiday travel can provide challenges, such as drunk drivers on the roads, added distractions, people rushing to destinations and fatigued driving. These are all factors that could lead to tragedy on the roadways, so we encourage everyone to drive responsibly during the holiday season.”

Here are some tips you can use for safe travels this holiday weekend:

  • Don't drink and drive
  • Don't text and drive and eliminate distractions
  • Buckle up
  • Slow down (especially in bad weather, construction zones and traffic)
  • Move over or slow down for emergency vehicles with lights flashing
  • Don't drive while you are tired
  • Keep your defenses up while driving (be aware of other people on the road)
  • Make sure your car or vehicle is maintained properly before you take off

DPS troopers will be out in full force on Texas roads. Last year they arrested 393 people for driving while intoxicated. They issued more than 7,400 speeding tickets and more than 900 safety restraint citations.
