AUSTIN -- The president of the embattled Christmas Bureau has been arrested by police.

The Austin Police Department said officers stopped Shon Washington after he ran a red light while driving on Wednesday. He was then arrested for failure to identify himself, as well as possession of methamphetamine.

Police said in a press conference Wednesday, Washington gave police a false name and only revealed his true identity when police began to take his finger prints.

Police said his arrest is not related to the Christmas Bureau, although the organization has been making headlines over the past month after Washington went missing, along with thousands of Christmas Bureau dollars.

The Christmas Bureau teams up with the Austin Police Department's Blue Santa program to help families in need every year. The Christmas Bureau's money typically helps families in need that Blue Santa can't.

When Washington wouldn't answer phone calls, an investigation revealed that he had multiple theft convictions from the past. He was charged with deceptive trade by the Attorney General's office. APD believes Washington took money from the non-profit's bank account.

On Dec. 5 the Attorney General's office also froze the Christmas Bureau's assets.
