ELGIN, Texas -- One man is dead, a woman is injured and another man is in jail after a house party filled with children turned violent.

Elgin police say gunshots broke out at the party Sunday evening. Balloons were still tied up around the porch Monday morning, but the shooting shattered the family fun.

Around 8:40 p.m. Sunday the 911 call came into Elgin police. Callers reported one man had been shot. When police arrived at the house on South Highway 95 they found the victim and the alleged gunman. Police say partygoers were holding him until they arrived.

According to witnesses, Pascual Carbajal Sanchez, 48, pulled out a gun 10 minutes earlier and shot Hilarion Alvardo Crieta, 42, in the back. They say Sanchez then turned and fired at least two more shots into the crowd.

“Another woman, a partygoer was shot. She was shot in the leg. It was a non-life threatening injury. She was transported to Brackenridge hospital,” explained Elgin Police Chief Chris Bratton.

Bratton says witnesses told police that Sanchez also tried to turn the gun on himself, but they got to him, stopped him and held him while others called for help.

Police don't know what sparked the violence, but they say the two men knew eachother.

“[As] far as we know they were related by marriage somehow, not exactly sure how that is yet. They came to the party together, something transpired between them that led to the shooting,” said Chief Bratton.

The investigation is ongoing. Bratton says officers are holding Sanchez and will officially book him on murder charges Monday morning.

There were more than 50 people at the party when the shots broke out. Most were young, between one and 16 years old.

“Parties are not unusual, people have parties all the time. But for them to end like this, it's a tragic event for people in the community,” said Chief Bratton.

Police say the party was being held in celebration of a church confirmation which took place Friday night.
