AUSTIN -- Democrat Celia Israel has been elected a Texas state representative for House District 50 in a special runoff election.

With all precincts reporting, Israel led Republican Mike VanDeWalle with 59.65 percent of the votes. VanDeWalle received 40.35 percent of the votes.

More than 9,700 votes were counted in the election.

Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa released the following statement:

"I’d like to congratulate Celia Israel and her team on their exciting win tonight in House District 50. I’m proud to say that we have one more Texas Democrat in the legislature. Celia represents the best of Texas -- a fighter who is dedicated to improving public schools, growing small businesses and ensuring a high quality of life for her constituents. Texans are tired of Tea Party politics and tonight’s victory is the first battle of many to ensure that Texans and not special interests are priority number one in Austin.  "
