AUSTIN -- This Valentine's Day, Austinites had one more special thing to celebrate: one of Austin's most beloved music venues.
Located in the University of Texas Union, the Cactus Cafe first opened its doors on Feb. 14, 1979.
The university almost closed the Cactus Cafe in 2010 due to budget cuts, but fortunately for music lovers, administrators reached a deal to keep the music playing and the drinks flowing.
The Cactus Cafe is now operated by KUT, Austin's public radio station.
The venue specializes in acoustic music. Many local legends performed at the Cactus Cafe long before they were famous, including the Dixie Chicks, Robert Earl Keen and Lyle Lovett.
