AUSTIN -- New details have emerged about 24-year-old Brandon Daniel as his roommate Dante Davis spoke out. Davis said Daniel had a great job and had never acted violent in the past. Witnesses say Daniel murdered Austin police officer Jaime Padron Friday morning outside a Walmart at I-35 and Parmer Lane.
Daniel and Davis lived together at an apartment complex just a few miles from the scene of the shooting. The two men met through Craigslist in January.
"This whole event is mind-boggling, like when the police came and talked to me, I thought they were talking about somebody else," Davis said.
Davis said Daniel spent his time working on computers, playing video games and riding his motorcycle. In February, police arrested Daniel for DWI.
"I see the pictures on TV, and that's just not who my roommate is," Davis said. "That guy looks like a psychopath."
Daniel worked at Hewlett Packard in Austin. According to Davis, Daniel earned more than $70,000 a year. Plus, he was just promoted.
At the time of the deadly shooting, witnesses say Daniel was drunk and trying to shoplift.
"The guy had so much going for him," Davis said. "He had just gotten a promotion and for him to be 24 and making that kind of money -- I don't see why anybody would do something that stupid."
A decision that witnesses say claimed the life of a senior police officer, Jaime Padron. Padron's two girls, six and 10, will now grow up without their father.
