AUSTIN -- A body found floating in the water near Mansfield Dam in West Austin has been identified.

The Travis County Sheriff's Office says the body is that of 27-year-old Shameka McGriff. She had been reported missing earlier this month.

Her body was found around 10 p.m. April 25 when a fisherman docking his boat shined a light in the water and saw it floating.

Travis County Sheriff’s deputies, along with firefighters and EMS responded to the scene.

McGriff's body was recovered from the water and taken to the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death and a positive identification. The medical examiner says the apparent cause of death is a gunshot wound to the head.

McGriff was reported missing from her North Travis County home on April 10 by her boyfriend, 28-year-old Kenneth Clark Jr. of Austin.

According to the Travis Co. sheriff, detectives had been following leads in the case that lead them to believe that McGriff was not alive and may have been placed in Lake Travis. Divers from the Travis County Sheriff’s Underwater Recovery Team had been searching for several days. Detectives interviewed Clark, but before they could investigate further or find McGriff's body, Clark took his own life in San Antonio. In his final writings he said that he placed McGriff's body in the water.

This is the fifth homicide of 2013.
