AUSTIN -- Santa's helpers made kids all over the city smile on Saturday as they delivered gifts as part of Operation Blue Santa.
Saturday afternoon, volunteers loaded up large boxes of toys to distribute to local children.
Santa himself was there, swapping his bright red suit for a bright blue one.
Volunteers waited in long lines to pick up the gifts donated for more than 3,800 families.
"It's amazing to see the smiles on the kids' faces when we come to the door and tell them we're Christmas elves," said volunteer Karen Low. "It's just great. It's a wonderful feeling."
Operation Blue Santa is organized by the Austin Police Department. Each of the families served receives a full holiday meal as well as a wrapped Christmas present for each child under the age of 14.
