AUSTIN -- Efforts are underway to collect food and toys for families in need with an Operation: Blue Santa fundraiser.

It's taking place Friday morning at the Shoal Crossing Events Center. The proceeds will go toward the toy drive, which is run by the Austin Police Department.

There is a gap in donations this year because the non-profit organization which teams up with APD is at the center of controversy. Police Chief Art Acevedo says the director of the Christmas Bureau, Shon Washington, was unreachable for weeks. No one knows what happened to the money that was collected to help Operation: Blue Santa.

Thousands of toys were collected at the Chuy's Children Giving to Children Parade earlier this month, but more donations are needed.

The event center is located off of MoPac in North Austin. If you donate, you'll receive a free breakfast.
