New building projects along Congress Avenue could soon fall under state regulation through a bill under consideration in the Texas Senate.
Sponsored by local state Sen. Kirk Watson (D-Austin), the legislation would require any new buildings over 90 feet tall built along Congress Avenue to be set back 60 feet on the West side and 40 feet on the East side of the street. Watson's office says the state law would simply codify existing city regulations and safeguard the scenic view of the Texas Capitol from Congress Avenue.
The bill has already passed the House. It comes at a time of unprecedented growth in downtown Austin. Just last week there was a proposal to add three new buildings to the skyline.
