Tuesday night neighbors got started on a plan to save a piece of East Austin history.

For 97 years now a chapel has sat on the grounds of the Oakwood Cemetery, and for much of that time, it has been ignored.

Now the city's parks and recreation department is working with a local architecture firm to keep the historic landmark from crumbling.

"It was overlooked, thank goodness, so it was not messed up," said architect Ben Heimsath. "And this is an opportunity to do something absolutely wonderful and somewhat unique because so few of these types of structures anywhere, not just in Austin, are in existence anymore."

Architects and the city heard from neighbors tonight who are still trying to raise money for the project. It would cost more than $400,000 to completely restore the chapel.
