AUSTIN -- Students across Austin participated in International Walk to School Day.

More than 1,000 schools in the U.S. walked to school Wednesday morning. Austin police, code compliance officers and park rangers helped guide students from Franklin Park to Rodriguez Elementary School. Volunteers from SafeKids Austin and the event's sponsor FedEx also took part in the event.

The World Health Organization says road traffic injuries are the second leading cause of death among kids ages five to 14 worldwide. Here in the U.S. close to 500 kids are killed every year while walking on the side of the road.

SafeKids Austin and FedEx continue to work together on a  program called Walk This Way. It promotes pedestrian safety, shows children where to walk and the right way to cross the street. It also promotes physical activity, as obesity rates continue to pose a problem for America's children.
