AUSTIN -- Police have detained a man accused of stealing a vehicle from a car wash in North Austin Saturday.
The Austin Police Department responded to a call at 1:37 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of N. Lamar Blvd and Fairfield Dr Saturday afternoon. Officials say the suspect stole a car from a car wash bay, then crashed the vehicle while leaving the scene.
No one was injured.
At 1:41 p.m., police found the unoccupied vehicle less than a mile away at the intersection of W Powell Ln and Georgian Dr. The car had stalled due to damage from the accident.
The suspect was not at the scene.
Thirty minutes later, officers found and detained a man described as 5'6" tall and between the ages of 20 and 30. His identity has not been released.
The car wash is described as a manual car wash where customers wash their own vehicles.
Austin police warn the public not to leave their keys in their cars and to remain vigilant.
