AUSTIN -- Hundreds in Austin are marching in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On Sunday, Dr. King would have turned 83 years old.
The celebration and remembrance in Austin started with the words of Dr. King himself playing out over a loud speaker on the University of Texas campus.
“We will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Hundreds surrounded the steps at the East Mall on the UT campus, near the statue of Dr. King. City and state officials spoke before the crowd of men and women, the young and the old. They all came to spread the message of Dr. King's life: seeking equality.
“It's important for me to participate in it. It's important for me also to bring my boys out so that they can stay plugged into our heritage. When I say our heritage I don't mean just African Americans, but the heritage and evolution of the United States,” said Curtis Blackwell.
Afterward, the group took off as one, marching off the campus and onto Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard with signs in hand and banners stretched out.
The group joined others at the State Capitol for another ceremony before setting foot on the march down MLK Jr. Blvd across Interstate 35 to Huston-Tillotson University on Chicon Street.
Events are scheduled at the University until 3 p.m., marking the 19th annual rally and march in Austin, honoring Dr. King.
