AUSTIN -- There's a new tool in the fight against varicose veins and rosacea. One Austin dermatologist says this device gets rid of the problem without the usual bruising and swelling in just one or two visits.
"They are very unattractive red streaks on your leg," said Kim Bates about varicose veins.
"I know that they're there," said Sally Daneshjou about her rosacea. "I am always feeling like people can see them."
Both women know what they want.
"I just want them gone," said Bates.
It's a simple request, but there hasn't been an easy or effective solution until now.
Gregory Nickolaidis, M.D., Dermatology with Westlake Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery, is the first in Austin to use the Cutera Titan XL infra red device.
"It coagulates the blood vessels by heating up the little blood cells within the blood vessels and closing them down," said Nickolaidis.
Nickolaidis says the Cutera XL uses a different wavelength than other vascular lasers. That means none of the common side effects, and it only takes a few minutes.
"In this day and age nobody wants to take time off," said Nickolaidis. "Thirty years ago we had vascular lasers, but they caused bruising. The new lasers cause less of that, but they cause a lot of swelling in some patients."
Nickolaidis says the best feature of the Cutera XL is it offers a permanent solution.
"The other lasers, you treat them and they would come back and come back," said Nickolaidis. "With this, I did one treatment and 80 percent are gone. It's amazing even to me."
Both Bates and Daneshjou say the product lives up to the hype.
"This particular procedure is quick and easy and no down time," said Daneshjou.
"I'm really happy they have this now, and they are able to do this now," said Bates. "The technology is there, and it makes it really easy to just come in and get rid of the problem. It is really nice."
Dr. Nickolaidis says one treatment is often all that's needed, however some patients may require one or two more. Each treatment costs about $400.
