AUSTIN -- A manhunt continued Wednesday for an armed robber who police say shot two victims at a Northeast apartment complex on Tuesday evening.
A family member of one of the victims who survived talked to KVUE about the close call.
“He said that it was very difficult to take the bullet out and it was a very delicate part where he got shot. It was the stomach area and all that area got affected,” said a cousin of the survivor who didn’t want to be identified.
Around 9:16 p.m. Austin police responded to shots fired at the Cameron Greens Apartments at 5700 Cameron Road near Highway 290.
It’s believed a slender black man between the age of 18 and 20, wearing dark pants and a dark hoodie walked through the complex with the sole intent of robbing people for money.
A witness told KVUE his cousin who was shot but survived was talking on the telephone in the breezeway outside his apartment when a man he didn’t know walked up demanding his wallet.
“He heard, 'give me your wallet' and he's like 'I don't have a wallet' and that's where everything started,” the cousin said.
19-year-old Reynaldo Ortega was shot in the parking lot of the complex in a separate location and later died.
Austin police told KVUE that robberies have gone down 41 percent in this area of Northeast Austin. Citywide the numbers have decreased by 27 percent.
