The Austin Independent School District has announced its Teachers of the Year for high school, middle school and elementary school.
Dr. Meria Carstarphen, AISD superintendent, surprised the three teachers with a bouquet of roses on Wednesday.
The honored teachers for 2010 are Andrea Claire Johnson, a language arts teacher at Reagan High School, Jill DiCuffa, a U.S. history teacher at the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders and Heather Lea Fleming, a fifth grade science teacher at Summitt Elementary School.
They were selected from more than 100 nominees and were chosen by colleagues and selection committees made of administrators, parents and professional association representatives.
One of the educators will be named the Austin Teacher of the Year on May 19 and will also serve as the district’s nominee for Texas Teacher of the Year.
Dr. Carstarphen said the Austin Teacher of the Year search is an opportunity each year to celebrate excellence in education.
“These three finalists represent the exemplary teaching that goes on every day across the Austin School District. I congratulate them on their selection, and thank them for the dedication they bring to their classrooms,” she said in a news release.
