AUSTIN -- The Austin City Council is hoping to help resolve the city's building permit backlog by looking at what other cities do. It approved a resolution directing the city manager to use a peer review, identifying best practices and to solicit their recommendations.

Right now, contractors and homeowners are waiting as long as three months for approvals that used to take one day to do renovations and add pools at their homes. City staff says a combination of being short staffed and an increase of applications led to the back log.

The council also approved spending about $5.9 million on the North Walnut Creek bike Trail Project and an ordinance to create a Commission on Veteran's Affairs.
