AUSTIN -- Police are investigating a robbery pursuit that ended with one officer shot.
Officers responded to a robbery call in the 5400 block of Interstate 35 in the Capital Plaza Shopping Center in East Austin Monday afternoon.
Witnesses said a black man with a gun walked into the Fallas store while an armored truck was exchanging money and demanded money from a clerk.
A 12-year-old girl told KVUE News she and her six-year-old brother witnessed the theft. The girl said her family was inside the Fallas store when a black man came in and demanded cash. She heard three shots fired.
Her brother told KVUE he saw the man fire three shots in the direction of the female store clerk. He said he thought she had been shot. Police tell KVUE the woman was not seriously hurt.
Police are questioning the family.
A vehicle pursuit ensued after the robbery and ended at the HEB on Manor and Springdale Roads.
It was there that police say shots were fired at officers and officers returned fire. One APD officer was hit and sustained non-life threatening injuries. KVUE News was told he was shot in the knee by either a bullet, glass or shrapnel. Tuesday morning APD Chief Art Acevedo said the officer was in "good condition."
After shots were fired, Austin police investigators say the suspect got away again.
Chief Acevedo said the man hijacked a car and forced the driver to bring him to his apartment off U.S. Highway 290. The victim of the hijacking called 911.
Chief Acevedo said that led police to the location where they made an arrest. At 5:15 p.m. APD told KVUE the suspect had been taken into custody.
Police traced the suspect's car to the Rosemont at Williamson Creek Apartments just south of East Highway 290.
