AUSTIN -- There was a mad dash for the finish line Thursday, all to benefit Operation Blue Santa.
Company Retail Me Not challenged two runners from the Austin Police and Fire Departments to a two-minute shopping spree. The teams collected up to $15,000 in merchandise for the charity.
APD Assistant Chief Jessica Robledo and AFD Chief Rhoda Mae Kerr were the first female duo to participate in the run. The two say they went in with a strategy.
"We were going to help get the big things on the cart and then split up with the smaller things, so we could each go in different directions," Chief Kerr said.
"[We would] try to balance them out and make sure we have enough items that will be beneficial," Assistant Chief Robledo said.
The duo had a rough start. Robledo crashed into Kerr at one point, sending her for a tumble. The two were able to get all of the things they needed in the end.
Delivery day for Operation Blue Santa is Saturday. Go here for more information.
