AUSTIN -- The Austin Fire Department is testing something new to keep flammable substances like gasoline and diesel fuel from igniting.

Firefighters tried it out during an exercise in East Austin on Wednesday. Battalion Chief Larry Jantzen calls it an "encapsulating agent." It keeps certain liquids from re-igniting.

The agent could take the place of traditional firefighting foam. Jantzen says AFD is evaluating it for use by the department's Hazardous Material Unit.
