AUSTIN -- The Austin Fire Department is investigating what caused a two-story home to catch fire in South Austin.

It broke out just after 6:30 a.m. Friday on Dawson Road near Daniel Drive and Post Oak Street. When crews arrived they said the home was engulfed in flames. Fire was showing from all sides of the home.

Firefighters put out the flames and went into defensive mode. They are continuing to put out hot spots.

AFD says the home is a total loss. The man who lived there, Micah Pokorney, was not injured. The Red Cross is now assisting him.

He told KVUE that he considers himself really lucky because he was heading out of town so he switched shifts at work. He says he doesn't have renter's insurance, but friends are already reaching out to him and offering him a place to stay.

A neighboring house also suffered some damage, but its residents will be allowed to go home later on Friday.
