911 caller describes shooting at rental property Saturday

911 caller recalls wild party

AUSTIN - Eric Pelletier awoke early Saturday morning to the sounds of an out of place party across the road on East Odell street.

"I was actually woken up at about 2:30 AM," he said. "Even though it was super late and probably too loud for the neighborhood, I thought 'it's St. Patrick's day. I'm not gonna worry about it too much.'"

But when gunshots rang out just minutes later - Pelletier couldn't ignore it any further. He told KVUE's Jason Puckett that he ran to the windows in his house to see "total chaos."

"It was really loud," he said. "I estimated somewhere between 12 and 15 shots let off within a minute to a minute and a half."

Pelletier said that he immediately called 911 as he saw dozens of party-goers fleeing the scene.

"There were just dozens and dozens of people running, jumping over the fence, climbing out the windows...I was scared to death that something really horrible was happening over there."

According to Pelletier, Austin Police arrived on scene about 20 minutes after the shooting. APD confirmed that they did respond to the location at 2:45 a.m. but haven't given any other information.

While no one was injured by gunshot, many neighbors questioned the safety of having a short term rental property nearby.

"I do get those concerns," Pelletier said. He said that he once hosted a short-term rental and understands the difficulties in vetting renters.

"I think it's really difficult to accurately screen the people coming into your home," he said. "You don't know what they're going to do. You don't know how they're going to impact your neighborhood. I think that's just part of the balance we have to look at."

The owners of the rental property apologized to the neighborhood on Facebook and neighbors like Pelletier said they hope it can be in the past.

"I'm not upset with them," he said. "I don't think the neighbors are upset with them...I really do think these types of incidents are rare enough."
