87 arrested for DWI during Memorial Day 'No Refusal' weekend

AUSTIN -- A total of 87 people have been arrested for DWI during the 2015 Memorial Day 'No Refusal' weekend in Austin.

31 arrests were made from breath samples and 56 from blood tests.

The highest recorded Blood Alcohol Content reading during the weekend was .208.

During Memorial Day weekend 2014, 28 arrests were made during the No Refusal initiative. Authorities recorded 154 collisions, including one fatal and six serious injury crashes. In that same weekend, police arrested 111 people accused of driving while intoxicated in Austin.

Drivers suspected of driving under the influence in the Austin area this weekend must voluntarily give a breath or blood sample or police will seek a warrant to draw their blood.

Austin police and other area law enforcement agencies, collectively known as Arrive Alive Central Texas (AACT), started the initiative to counter traffic-related fatalities. AACT will run its "No Refusal" campaign from May 22 to May 26.
