2 gas main breaks force lane closures, evacuations

AUSTIN - Two apartment buildings were evacuated in West Campus and a few roads near downtown were blocked off after two four-inch gas line main breaks ruptured Monday afternoon.

Interstate 35 Frontage Road northbound was closed between 10th and 11th streets while crews worked. Police diverted traffic from northbound Frontage Road and 8th street to the north I-35 ramp.

Just before 6 p.m., fire officials said Texas gas had stopped the leak that was hit on 8th street. Two northbound frontage lanes would remain closed while crews continued to make repairs, while one lane would remain open.

Two apartment complexes at 22nd Street and San Gabriel, the site of the second leak, were evacuated while crews repaired the line. Just before 4:45 p.m., residents were allowed to return to their apartments.
