AUSTIN --Two people are dead after a head-on collision in North Austin.

It happened shortly before 1 a.m. in the 12000 block of North MoPac near Duval.

Police say a 26-year-old Emily Marie Palmer-Dunham driving a Honda Civic was going the wrong way on northbound MoPac. She slammed into a Chevy Malibu driven by a 48-year-old man.

Palmer-Dunham was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was taken to a local hospital but died a few hours later.

Austin-Travis County EMS treated two other people at the scene. They were apparently in an SUV that swerved to get out of the way when the crash occurred. Their SUV was damaged.

The scene of the crash took about three hours to clear.

"There's fluids everywhere. Battery acid, radiator fluids, everything that way. And plus one of the vehicles was on fire. Officers put it out with fire extinguishers, and then the fire department came in as fast as the fire and washed down all the fluids," Sgt. Darrell Burnham with APD said at the time.

Police say it's too early to determine whether alcohol played a role. If you have information regarding this crash, you are asked to call police at (512) 974-5594.

This is Austin's 60th fatal traffic crash of the year.
