AUSTIN -- Five crews from Austin's Code Compliance Department are assessing the damage at homes that flooded following heavy rainfall late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.
They said about 1,100 homes suffered water damage. Of those, 12 were deemed destroyed and too dangerous for re-entry.
Officials have marked 324 of those homes with a red sign, indicating dangerous conditions and that residents could enter at their own risk. Yellow tags were placed on 185 homes, meaning they will need repairs.
Crews hope to finish tagging all the damaged homes on Saturday.
"We realize people are coming back and they are starting to clean out, clean up, so we want to get out of their way, but we want to make sure we have done a careful and thorough assessment of the damage before then," said Carl Smart, director of the Code Compliance Department of Austin.
