1 arrested, 1 sought after crash turns into an alleged assault

AUSTIN - Police have arrested a 19-year-old and identified two other suspects in an alleged road rage incident that led to the assault of a driver.

Last Friday, police received a call about a crash near the intersection of North Lamar Boulevard and Provines Drive. According to witnesses and those involved in the crash, the driver of one of the vehicles got out of his car to check on his wife and to exchange insurance information with the other driver after the collision.

Witnesses said that the three occupants of the other vehicle -- including 19-year-old Charlie Yanez -- became aggressive and started threatening the husband. At least one of the occupants allegedly assaulted the husband and threatened to kill him and his wife.

One of the witnesses began filming the incident, which made Yanez upset. He allegedly broke the witness' phone by smashing it on the ground. Yanez then allegedly pulled out a pocket knife and went to stab one of the witnesses. A different witness pulled the man away from Yanez, which they said kept Yanez from successfully stabbing him.

Yanez then allegedly threatened to shoot the witnesses before he began "looking for something in his car," according to the affidavit.

When police arrived, the three occupants, including Yanez, ran from them. Yanez and one of the other occupants -- a juvenile -- eventually stopped. One other suspect is still on the run, according to the affidavit released Monday.

Yanez is currently in Travis County Jail under the charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
