County commissioners to vote on extending grant funding

TRAVIS COUNTY - County commissioners on Tuesday will vote to extend funding to services after Gov. Greg Abbott stripped the county of $1.5 million in grant funding earlier this year.

The funding was stripped in February when Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez’s new policy for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detailers went into effect. Shortly after that, commissioners unanimously voted to eliminate 14 positions that fall under programs affected by the cuts, effective May 15. The positions lost would be in programs that include family violence, veterans’ court and family drug treatment court.

The county’s planning and budget office found that through their reorganization, there would be a reduction of cost to taxpayers without significantly impacting any of the programs. Commissioners are expected to vote to keep the programs running by shifting around the budget.

This story will be updated after commissioners vote on the proposal.
