Texas Legislature
Budget-writing senators question proposal to sell lottery
01:55 PM CST on Monday, February 19, 2007
Some legislators Monday expressed concerns that the proposed sale of the Texas lottery to a private company could allow expansion of gambling to slot machines.
The lottery's annual $1 billion payments to public education and the state's role in regulating the lottery if it were sold are also under review.
Questions are being raised by members of the powerful Senate Finance Committee.
Senator Troy Fraser wondered whether a private firm might view slot machines as a form of gambling similar to the lottery and put slot games in convenience stores.
Governor Rick Perry is proposing selling the Texas lottery for at least $14 billion to fund cancer research, health insurance and education.
