HOUSTON – The crew of the next shuttle mission – which happens to be the very last shuttle mission – is busy getting ready for the launch.

The targeted date for Atlantis’ last trip to space is July 8.

It will mark the end of the 30-year space shuttle program.

Astronaut Sandra Magnus will have the distinction of being the last female astronaut to fly on a shuttle.

She said this is a bittersweet time, but she wants to concentrate on the positive.

"It does mark the time where NASA feels like it’s ready to get out of lower Earth orbit and move further away from the planet with our efforts of exploration, and that’s really exciting," Magnus said.
