Perry to move out of mansion for renovations

AUSTIN -- Governor Rick Perry will be getting a new home address.

State officials Wednesday announced plans for a $10 million renovation of the governor's mansion in Austin.

Frequent toilet overflows, asbestos and lead paint in the historic structure will be among the problems fixed during the overhaul, which will start his fall.

"A lot of that was installed back in 1914," said mechanical engineer Bill Harris. "We're having a lot of stoppages, and really, it does need to be replaced, it has definitely seen its life."

Perry and his wife, Anita, will move out of the 150-year old home during the project, which could take up to a year and a half.

"It's a stand alone entity that will survive beyond whoever happens to occupy the mansion, and it needs to be fixed," said Robert Black, spokesman for the Governor.

The Perrys haven't yet decided on their new residence. State law requires Perry to live in Austin as long as he's governor.

Rent for the Perrys was factored into the $10 million estimate.

"We hope that there are not a lot of unknowns and unforseen problems so that we could come in below that amount," said Edward Johnson, executive director of the Texas Building Procurement Commission.

Experts say historic construction materials, like the long leaf pine around the windows, will be restored. Much of the wood is rotting.

The two-story mansion was built in 1856 in the Greek Revival style.
