Governor Rick Perry has appointed a special investigator to look into allegations that supervisors at the West Texas State School sexually abused teen inmates and covered it up. The Texas Youth Commission runs the state's juvenile rehabilitation facilities and has come under fire this week amid the allegations.
"Allegations that the TYC staff removed inmates from their classes or their dorm rooms so that they can abuse them," said State Senator Steve Ogden, R-Bryan.
Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle issued a statement Friday, saying his office will investigate wrongdoing at the Austin headquarters of the Texas Youth Commission.
"It has been reported that documents relating to TYC officials in Austin and their handling of allegations of sexual misconduct at a TYC facility in West Texas were altered at TYC headquarters in Austin," the statement said.
The Governor also ordered the agency to enter a rehabilitation program to solve problems the special investigator finds. The move follows a recommendation by a special committee of the State Legislature.
"We're deeply concerned, but it's more like, we're shocked and dismayed," said State Rep. Jim Keffer, R-Eastland.
The Legislative Audit Committee, made up of House and Senate members called on Governor Perry to remove the agency's board and put a conservator in place, instead.
"And put in place the protection that these young people need," Lt. Governor David Dewhurst said.
Instead, the Governor decided to address the problem with the investigator and the rehabilitation program. Lawmakers say they're hopeful investigations will help solve the problems.
"I look forward to working with [the Governor] and the members of the House and Senate to get to the bottom of this extremely, extremely troubling matter," said Rep. Keffer.
