Bill would lift eBay sales tax requirement for some

Online auction sites like eBay grow in popularity every year, and now, they're the subject of a new bill in the Texas House. EBay is still the world's most popular online marketplace.
"It's a community. So people feel that they're part of this huge community. And it's just so easy," said Armando Filoteo, eBay store owner.
But under a little known Texas law, sellers are required to charge the state sales tax, which is something most sellers don't do.
"Technically, if they're not collecting sales tax and they sell more than two items a year, then they're breaking the law," said State Representative Scott Hochberg, D-Houston.
A bill filed by Hochberg would change that. HB 373 would allow those who sell less than $3,000 worth of goods a year to be exempt from charging buyers a sales tax.
"I want to make sure nobody gets caught up in a technical violation of the law, when really they're not operating a business," Hochberg said.
The Houston Democrat expects the bill will sell well with other House members this session.
"I'm reasonably certain that we can pass it," he said.
