09:50 AM CST on Wednesday, December 20, 2006
The Food and Drug Administration put out a troublesome warning Tuesday about painkillers, some you probably have in your medicine cabinet.
Researchers particularly point to acetaminophen, products like Tylenol.
They say acetaminophen overdoses lead to more than 56,000 emergency room visits a year, 26,000 hospitalizations, some of which are overdose patients require liver transplants.
The FDA estimates that 200 people a year die from acetaminophen overdoses.
Aspirin has caused bleeding problems.
Overdoses of ibuprofen and naproxen sold under names like Advil and Aleve have led to kidney damage.
The FDA is proposing new labels that warn of the dangers.
The news is much better when it comes to vitamin D.
A slew of research has come out in recent days touting the benefits of the vitamin.
The latest finds that vitamin D may help prevent multiple sclerosis.
Other studies have found it can also reduce the risk of osteoporosis, rickets and diabetes.
Best sources for vitamin D are milk, salmon and sunlight.
