Health officials: 16 typhus cases in Austin area
05:50 AM CDT on Friday, August 29, 2008
Health officials Thursday reported more cases of typhus in the Austin area.
There are now 16 cases of typhus, with another 12 cases under investigation.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed last week that test results showed the presence of Murine Typhus, which is spread by infected fleas.
Raccoons and opossums are often carriers. Symptoms include high fever, severe headaches, muscle pain and a blotchy rash.
The disease can be deadly if left untreated, but typhus can be cured with antibiotics.
