Centers for Disease Control and Prevention test results have confirmed the presence of Murine Typhus, a disease sometimes found in the Texas Valley, Austin health officials reported.

The Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department Thursday said there are now 15 confirmed cases of typhus and four suspected cases under investigation.

Most of the cases have turned up in ZIP code 78703, but health officials say the entire county is at risk for exposure. The disease could infect people of all ages.

Health officials say rodents and wildlife like opossums and raccoons infected with the disease could have fleas that transmit it to pets and people. They urge residents to avoid flea exposure by protecting themselves in flea-infested areas and using flea control methods.

CDC field workers are continuing their environmental investigation into the sourse of the typhus outbreak.
