All of the controversy surrounding the HPV vaccine has raised awareness about the virus that can cause cervical cancer.

Many young women are rushing to their doctors to get the vaccine while others are wondering whether they should do the same.

The vaccine that became available a few months ago can prevent HPV, a sexually transmitted virus that causes most cases of cervical cancer.

"Statistically, I heard, one in four girls are graduating from college with it," said Darci Russell.

She is not the average 22-year-old.

"i will get the vaccination," she said.

Russell was just graduated from the University of Houston and is headed for nursing school.

The 18 to 28-year-olds should be a prime focus of the HPV push.

But about all that most women in Texas know is the governor's plan to require the vaccine for all girls as they enter the sixth grade.

"The vaccine is most effective when given to a naive female, a female that hasn't been sexually active," explained Dr. Denise Nebgen, an Ob-gyn at Methodist Hospital.

It takes three shots to be effective.

One hospital in the Texas Medical Center is charging $350 a shot -- nearly triple what the manufacturer is charging medical providers.

"We charge $150 and it comes in three shots," said Dr. Nebgen. "W e chose not to make any money on this."

Which Darci Russell says shouldn't matter.

"You know it's your health," said Russell. "There shouldn't be a cost for your health."

If you're wondering what role men play in all this: We're walking around, carrying the virus, infecting the women we love. And there's no vaccine for us.

But that day is coming..
