PLANO, Texas –– A movement at Plano Senior High School is aiming to change the face of what’s considered beautiful.
“I think there’s a lot of pressure for girls to look a certain way,” says PSHS senior Madeline Milby, who, with a group of friends, was tired of wearing makeup each day.
Some of her classmates spend as much as two hours each day getting dolled up. Fellow senior Monica Plenger says some of her peers can’t imagine going without makeup.
“They really think they look different with the makeup and they think they are really ugly without it, which is really sad,” she said.
So the group of girls at Plano High decided it would be a great idea to give up makeup for a day.
“We put out a YouTube video just to tell our story,” said senior Binna Kim.
They say the reaction they got from their classmates, and even other schools, has been overwhelming. They didn’t know it would gain momentum like that, but Plenger confides, “I actually had a secret dream that it would”.
Many boys at school have been supportive.
“I think they are beautiful just in their own skin,” says one male classmate in the student YouTube video.
But it matters what the other girls think as well, as Milby explained, “I feel like girls are often looking at your outfit, your hair; and that they’re judging your outfit”.
So going natural would only work if most of the young ladies went fresh-faced together, says Plenger, “So you are no longer in the minority if you don’t wear makeup."
This Friday at Plano High, the majority of the female students -- and teachers -- will face the day without covering up. Asked if she will miss makeup, Plenger says no –– but with a tad of uncertainty, “I don’t think so."
The aim of “Operation Beautiful” is to expose the beauty that is underneath the foundation, blush and mascara, says Kim.
“A lot of it was just being honest with each other; not having to put this mask on every day we come to school and just be vulnerable with each other.”
What would be truly beautiful, the teens say, is to see this movement extend beyond this school and beyond just one day.
