AUSTIN -- Dozens of activists representing religious groups are gathered at the Texas Capitol calling for expanding health care for the poor.

Democratic lawmakers from across the state joined the religious leaders from all faiths on the north steps to call for more Medicaid spending.

Texas is one of a handful of states that has refused to expand the number of poor people covered by Medicaid, a joint state-federal program. The federal government is offering to cover more than 90 percent of the cost if Texas adds about 1.5 million uninsured, working poor people to the program.

Republican Gov. Rick Perry, though, has said Medicaid is a broken program and has said he opposes adding more people to it.

Democrats argue that by spending $15 billion, the state would get $100 billion.
