NEW YORK — PepsiCo plans to remove full-calorie, sugary drinks from schools around the world in the next two years.

The move, aimed at fighting childhood obesity, follows the success of similar changes in the U.S. by PepsiCo and rival Coca-Cola.

The World Heart Federation has been negotiating with soft drink makers on these moves for the past year. PepsiCo becomes the first major soda maker to expand the policy worldwide.

World Heart Federation President Pekka Puska says marketing of sugary drinks in schools is much more intense outside of the U.S., and he hopes other companies follow suit.

Coca-Cola this month changed its sales policy to say it won't sell any of its drinks in primary schools worldwide unless parents or school districts ask.
