HOUSTON—Remember those long lines of people waiting for H1N1 vaccine back in November? A low supply of vaccine and a high demand for it caused the crowds, but things have now changed.
Now you can get right in and get your shot at many pharmacies and City of Houston Health clinics.
“We’ve got plenty of vaccine and no one is in line to get it,” said Dr. David Persse, the City of Houston Health Director.
Experts said they are concerned because although there is more than enough vaccine, there are very few takers.
That’s because pandemics, like H1N1, usually come in three waves. Experts said the Greater Houston area has only seen two since last spring.
“Now it’s lessened,” said Dr. Persse. “If history repeats itself, which it generally does, we could fully anticipate a third wave coming in the next week to months, and we need to prepare for it.”
Shots are now available to everyone, not just people in high-risk health groups.
But people are still divided on whether they’ll get the vaccine.
Annette Morales said she doesn’t believe in vaccines.
“Not doing it,” said Morales. When pressed about the lines being down she said, “Nope, not doing it.”
Bill Henry is a cancer patient who has already received his shot. He highly recommended it.
“Go, absolutely. Go. Better safe than sorry,” said Henry.
While the lines have dwindled, experts said unfortunately, the swine flu is still around. Doctors are now getting ready for that next wave.
