Breast cancer survivor creates juicing company

AUSTIN -- Hearing you have breast cancer is scary at any age, especially as a mother for the first time. Shauna Martin, 33, turned her stage two breast cancer diagnosis into a life saving mission.

"It's crazy,” she recalled. “My son was about nine months old. So I went to the doctor. He said, 'I bet it's nothing, but we should stop and get it checked out.’ So I did. And it was breast cancer. Your life flashes before your eyes. You've got a one-year-old and you're like, 'How am I going to take care of a one-year-old?'"

On a hunch, she urged her sister to get checked, too.

"My sister went and got checked out, and she had breast cancer, too. She was 31," said Martin.

Her entire family's focus shifted to beating cancer.

"I did chemotherapy for nine months, and then followed that up with a double mastectomy, (and) reconstruction," she said.

"I came out of the experience pretty much broken. My body was really a mess," she said.

Shauna read a lot during all those treatments.

"Breast cancer is one of those cancers where you never, ever get a clean bill of health. It can come back at any time,” she said. "The one thing I had control over, is the food I put into my body."

"There is a growing body of evidence that shows diet and cancer have connections," said Deirdre Earls, a registered dietician. "Particularly in the case of cancer, cruciferous vegetables have been shown to have a real benefit for prevention. Cruciferous vegetables are things like kale, arugula, bok choy, watercress."

Those greens became central to what Martin ate and drank.

"They called it my pond water," Martin said.

Her signature green juices became all family and friends talked about. But most of them found it too difficult, and time consuming, to mix the juices on their own.

"I decided if I was really going to get everybody to drink a green juice every day, I had to create a lot of flavors," said Martin.

So she created Daily Greens, a juicing company that makes it easy for anyone to drink their veggies.

Now with five flavors, Martin is selling them at stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas.

"We add the fruit only to make it sweet enough, and fun enough, for you to drink it every day," she said.

Martin packs six pounds of produce into each bottle, with one goal in mind: to ensure everyone enjoys their veggies.
